Visual Schedules: News & Updates

What is a Visual Schedule?

Visual schedules are images used to show an upcoming task or event.

Who should use them?

Visual schedules may be used for people who are unable to read due to age or a disability. They can also be used for visual and tactile learners. When I was teaching special education, they were most beneficial for my students with Autism because it provided structure and an idea of what would be coming to help regulate emotions.

How are they helpful?

If modeled and introduced well, children ask fewer questions about what is expected and become independent learners. It also encourages responsibility and helps with time management. For children with behavioral concerns or Autism, it provides a sense of predictability. They will know what to expect and will more likely be emotionally ready.

Where can I get one?

You can create your own or I have digital copies for $3 on my teachers pay teachers account. They can be accessed at:  https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Visual-Schedule-for-Home-and-School-5856772

How do I use Visual Schedules effectively?

MODEL and PRAISE! I can't express this enough. Children respond well to specific, verbal praise and modeling. Having multiple schedules can assist with modeling. Making comments like, "WOW! Look at everything you have accomplished! You are working so hard!" etc. might seem unimportant, but can be extremely motivating. Children often seek out attention. Providing them with positive attention prevents them from seeking out negative attention.
